So You're Doing Engagement Photos...

Engagement photos are an exciting part of your wedding journey—it's your first chance to step in front of the camera as a couple and let loose! But, I know, the thought of being in front of a lens can make even the most confident people feel a little nervous. Those couples all loved up on each other? You're not sure that will be the two of you, you're a bit awkward and nervous.

No worries though—I’ve got you covered. Here’s what you can expect during your engagement shoot!

Before Your Shoot

  1. What to Wear: You want to look like you, so go for outfits that make you feel comfortable and confident. Some couples choose two outfits—one more casual and one a little more formal, but you do you! Think about complementary colors (not identical outfits). Layers are always a win—flannels, jackets, scarves, or cardigans add depth and texture. Not sure what to wear? Refer to my style guide for tips on colors and fabrics that photograph beautifully!
  2. When to Do Your Shoot: A good rule of thumb is to schedule your engagement session about 9 months before your wedding—this timing is great for save-the-dates and helps you feel organized. If you're planning a spring or fall wedding, that’s also a great time to think about timing your engagement shoot to match the season. The magic happens about 90 minutes before sunset—that’s when you get the gorgeous, soft light everyone loves. Depending on where you are, this timing can vary, but we’ll always plan for that golden hour glow!
  3. Where to Go: The location is where your personalities and relationship shine. Think of places that are meaningful to you both—maybe it's where you first met, your favorite coffee shop, or that cozy spot you go for date night. Locations tied to your love story will make the photos feel more personal. If you’re looking for something scenic, here are a few favorites in the area:

  • High Falls for city views.
  • Durand Eastman Park for waterfront and wooded vibes.
  • Holley Falls for epic waterfalls with a low-effort hike (pair this with Northampton Park for some open fields!)
  • Chimney Bluffs State Park for epic views and moody vibes.

During Your Shoot

Just be yourselves! I’ll guide you every step of the way, but the best thing you can do is embrace the moment. Movement is key—no need to stay still and stiff. Whether you’re twirling your partner or just casually walking hand in hand, it’s all about connecting. Be affectionate, and don’t hold back on the laughs! Rule of thumb: unless I tell you to look at me, assume you're looking at your partner.

What to Do: I know it can feel awkward at first (especially if you’re not used to being in front of the camera), but I promise it’s going to be okay. I’m here to guide you with prompts, and I’ll encourage lots of movement and natural interactions. If something feels silly, laugh! Engagement shoots should be fun, not stressful. So, shake off the nerves and enjoy the process. The more relaxed you are, the better your photos will be! I will be there to tell you where to put your hand or fix your hair if needed, so you just enjoy the process!

How You’ll Feel: Full transparency—most couples feel a bit weird at first. It’s totally normal! The first 10-15 minutesare usually the most awkward, but that’s just us breaking the ice. By the time we get into the swing of things, you’ll likely forget you’re even being photographed. Trust me, I’ve never had a couple not warm up to it.

After Your Shoot

That Wasn’t Too Bad, Right? It’s a pretty common text I get from clients: “Wait, that was actually fun?!” The awkwardness fades away and you’re left with memories of a fun date night with beautiful photos. Plus, now you’re one step closer to your wedding day! The best part? No more worrying about that "awkward photo shoot" that people dread.

Turnaround Time/Post-Processing: You’ll get a sneak peek of your photos within 3 days, so you don’t have to wait long to relive the magic! The full gallery will be ready within 3 weeks. Good things take time, and I promise it’ll be worth the wait. The sneak peek will hold you over, though, until I’ve finished editing the full set.
